John Baty holds a joint appointment at Johns Hopkins University as Assistant Research Professor and Heritage Science for Conservation (HSC) Scientist in the Departments of Conservation and Preservation--Sheridan Libraries and University Museums, and Materials Science and Engineering--Whiting School of Engineering. HSC is funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to bring book and paper conservators, scientists, and engineers into the same working environment to research fundamental questions of materials degradation and conservation techniques; to expand the repertoire of scientific analyses to support conservation; and to develop information, products, and processes of demonstrated use on the conservato's bench. At HSC, Baty conducts book and paper conservation research and supervises students and fellows while developing partnerships with conservators, scientists, engineers, and industry. In the Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering he teaches lecture and research internship courses. He has been a research assistant at the University of Iowa Center for the Book, a research chemist at Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc., and a research chemist at the National Archives and Records Administration. He holds a PhD from the School of Materials--paper science group--at the University of Manchester in the UK and completed an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at HSC at Johns Hopkins University.
