Marta Leskard received an Master's in Art Conservation from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, in 1982 following on from a 1st class Honours BA in Classics (Greek & Latin) and an MA in Archaeology (Minoan & Mycenaean).

With 32 years experience as a conservator and conservation/ collections care manager, first working for a national heritage organization and then for metropolitan, regional and national museums in two countries, she has worked on a diverse range of objects. In the last ten years, she has specialised in the conservation of large industrial and technological objects, taking on the post as the Conservation and Collections Care Manager for the Science Museum's Wroughton site from 2004. More recently, she has become involved in the development of sustainable storage facilities for the Science Museum Group which has led to her current part-time research PhD in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath, investigating the feasibility and effectiveness of innovative construction materials in order to produce passive environmental controls suitable for the preservation of historic objects.

Marta's most recent conference papers have been on the policies and procedures for selecting and operating historic objects from the Science Museum collections, presented at Incredible Industry, Nordisk Konservator Forbund, 2009, and Machines As Evidence, English Heritage/ Science Museum seminar 2009 and on sustainable storage building projects, presented at Climate for Collections, Standards and Uncertainties, Munich 2012 (published Archetype Publications 2013) and Big Stuff, Ottawa 2013.
