Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Haude has been a senior paper conservator at the Library of Congress since 2003. In her daily activities she performs conservation treatments and conducts materials research on a variety of paper-based artifacts, such as art on paper and manuscripts. Betsy’s primary research focus is the materiality of manuscripts created in Mexico in the early 16th century, particularly those made by indigenous scribes. To facilitate her current research, she has been using multimodality imaging in conjunction with other analytical techniques to characterize the colorants and substrates of two significant Mexican manuscripts in the Library of Congress’s collections. Betsy holds a Master of Library and Information Science with an Advanced Certificate in Conservation and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin.
