Since 1992 David Bayne has been the Furniture Conservator for the New York State Bureau of Historic Sites located at the Peebles Island Resource Center in Waterford New York. David graduated from Reed College with a degree in Biology in 1976. For the next 10 years he worked as a timber framer a musical instrument maker and a custom furnituremaker. In 1990 he graduated from the Smithsonian Institution’s Furniture Conservation Training Program. After graduation he worked on mostly 18th century American furniture for the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities the US Department of State the Winterthur Museum and private clients. At the Shelburne Museum in Vermont David also worked on wooden folk sculpture of all sorts. He has published his conservation work in the American Institute for Conservation's Wooden Artifacts Group Postprints . He has given lectures on conservation to many audiences including the Furniture Society the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums the American Association of State and Local Historians and the American Association of Museums. In 1994 he was on the planning committee for the symposium "Painted Wood: History and Conservation” at Williamsburg VA. In addition to lectures at AIC conferences he presented a poster at a study week for L'Institut International de Conservation - Section Française in Chalon-sur-Saône France. In 2002 he co-presented a paper at The Forgotten History a symposium on upholstery conservation in Vadstena Sweden. David was the principal organizer for the 2001 and 2004 Furniture in France study trips. The study trips offered a scholarship for 17 furniture conservators curators and woodworkers to spend eighteen days touring France. Over 40 venues  were visited in Paris and eight other cities. In 2006 he organized reciprocal visits for French colleagues to visit the United States. An international symposium was organized at Winterthur Museum for the visiting French. As a result of all these activities three magazine publications and a set of 7 DVD’s were produced.
