Harriet Irgang Alden is the Director and senior paintings conservator of Rustin Levenson Art Conservation Associates in New York City. She earned her B.A. in art history frorm Brooklyn College and her M.A. Art History with a diploma in Art Conservation from the Conservation Center at the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University. Pre-program internships included the Hispanic Society of America and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. As a graduate student she had internships at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She joined Rustin Levenson’s firm in 1984. Her publications include “Considering Artists’ Intent in the Public Arena”, “’Shade of Faith’: the Conservation of a Painted Sukkah Decoration” (in collaboration with Judith Eisenberg, Textile Conservator), and a book review for Journal of the American Institute for Conservation. Among talks and presentations she has given, she has lectured at the College Art Association on “Conservation Collaborations: Working with Artists,” to the Historic Districts Council Annual Meeting on “The Restoration and Preservation of Murals,” and to the AIC Painting Specialty Group in Nashville on “Considering The Artists’ Intent in the Public Arena.”  She has supervised an international array of interns and post-graduate trainees. In 1989 and again in 1998 she was invited by the Stichting Kollektief Restauratie Atelier of Amsterdam to treat paintings from the 17th to the 19th centuries. In 2004 her participation in the IIC congress on modern art held in Bilbao, Spain, was made possible by a professional development grant from the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation. From 2004 until 2007she traveled as a contract conservator for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum supervising the installation of large-scale contemporary paintings in Japan, Germany, China, and Russia. She holds Professional Associate status in AIC and is a member of the International Institute for Conservation. She has served on the steering committee of the New York Conservation Association and is presently Vice-President of the New York Regional Association for Conservation.
