Kara Van Malssen is senior consultant at AVPreserve, where she works with clients on digital preservation/conservation and metadata management initiatives. She is also adjunct professor at New York University (NYU), where she teaches courses in Digital Preservation and Digital Literacy for the Moving Image Archiving and Preservation (MIAP) graduate program. Kara's work with disaster preparedness and recovery began in 2005 when, as a student in NYU's MIAP program and as part of her master’s thesis, she conducted research and helped organizations in New Orleans whose audiovisual collections were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. In 2012, she used her experience in disaster response to manage the recovery of the media archive at Eyebeam Art+Technology Center following Superstorm Sandy. She has taught disaster preparedness and recovery workshops for Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO), the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) Sound and Image Collections Conservation programme, and for NYU MIAP.
