John Gillis is a Senior Book and Manuscript Conservator. He has worked in the Library Conservation Department of Trinity College Dublin for many years. While on secondment from Trinity, he established and worked as Head of Conservation in the Delmas Conservation Bindery, at Archbishop Marsh’s Library Dublin. He has taught conservation techniques in a number of schools in Italy for over fifteen years. In 2007 John was seconded again, this time to The National Museum of Ireland and here he began the four and a half year conservation of the Faddan More Psalter- a unique early medieval manuscript discovered in an Irish bog in 2006- for which he won the Heritage Council of Ireland Conservation Award in 2010. He is a regular on the lecture circuit in relation to conservation matters and in more recent years he has delivered talks, lectures and papers on many aspects of the Faddan More Psalter, including the codicology, the text and its relationship to other contemporary insular manuscripts. Now back in Trinity, John has commenced Post Graduate Research work on codicological aspects of the Faddan More Psalter with the intent of carrying out a very detailed examination of early medieval bookmaking and the relationship between the Insular and Mediterranean traditions.
